At AWP, we build wastewater treatment systems that perform—and the MBBR Biological Reactor is at the heart of it all. We incorporate Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) technology into over 90% of the wastewater treatment plants we design, delivering a powerful, efficient, and low-maintenance solution for biological treatment.
The MBBR biological reactor is a high-efficiency treatment system based on fixed-film biofilm principles. Unlike traditional activated sludge systems, MBBR eliminates the need for sludge return while maintaining high biological activity in a compact footprint.
Inside the reactor, free-floating plastic carriers provide an ideal surface for bacterial growth. With consistent aeration and mixing, these carriers remain suspended throughout the tank, supporting robust biofilm development. As the biofilm thickens, excess biomass naturally sloughs off and is removed with the treated water—streamlining operation and reducing solids handling downstream.
Each AWP MBBR system is custom-designed to optimize treatment outcomes. Typical configurations include:
2–3 Aeration Zones – Promote aerobic digestion of organics and ammonium.
Degassing Zone – Eliminates excessive gases that can disrupt biological performance.
Denitrification Zone – Supports biological nitrogen removal to meet tight Total Nitrogen (TN) and Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen (TKN) limits.
AWP’s MBBR systems include variable frequency drives (VFDs) and integrated dissolved oxygen (DO) sensors, allowing real-time control of aeration intensity. This means:
Delivers high treatment capacity with lower sludge production and no need for sludge recycling.
Energy-efficient performance with minimal maintenance requirements.
Handles flow surges, organic loading, and process upsets with ease; easily expandable with additional carrier media.
Enhances nitrification and sludge retention time (SRT) for advanced treatment results.
